Christmas ornament collector
Joanne Radke of San Diego came all the way to downtown Orange for the district’s Holiday Open House in hopes of adding some rare vintage Christmas ornaments to her extensive collection. She began collecting Christmas ornaments when her immigrant Polish grandmother and her mother gave her some vintage glass ornaments when she was just a girl. She now has several hundred figural Santas, blown glass reindeers, wooden soldiers, and brass partridges. She regularly shops on Grand Avenue in Escondido, the antique district in Carlsbad, and Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach.

Scary to sexy
While most vintage Halloween items date back to the 1950s, in the holiday’s heyday prior to the razor blade in the apple scare ,dealer Gloria Crane offered a black cat that is almost 100 years old.The World War I vintage wooden black cat, from around 1915, doubled as either an ashtray holder or a candlestick for $245.Although she is a fan of vintage Halloween items, Crane has a collection of around a dozen Whitney postcards starting at $70 in value.Dealer Judy Plotkin didn’t offer vintage Hawaiian ephemera, but she was selling several costumes at the last Rose Bowl. Her offerings ranged from sexy seductresses to scary ghouls. She offered a grim reaper skull for $30 and a $25 Lady Godiva outfit that included a body suit.
