She passed the test
It became clear that the Hillsborough Show was the place to be, when a dealer was so desperate to do the show that she was willing to set up in the parking lot or even the women’s bathroom. The desperate dealer was Carol Mitchell, the Frau of Fishbowls, who did not find out until the last minute that she would be available for the show. She did not have to find a little cubby; manager Nancy Johnson found a spot for her.Lenore Dailey had the premiere space in the front of the show and there was never a moment when her space was not swarming with Victorian mourning jewelry fans. Her crowd was rivaled only by the one that filled the space of the Swedish toy dealer. His space looked like F.A.O. Schwarz in the 1940s or ’50s. Fresh from his own Golden California Show, Sandy Raulston thought the show was great. He said was only one dealer who was derelect in setting up her booth on time, and that was Nancy Johnson, who was a little bit busy running the show.Johnson said that all of the dealers were polite and civilized. She believes that is due to the new discipline she has invoked. Dealers are appreciative to be there and are on their best behavior. Several dealers even commented on the easy move-in.What had to be considered the biggest accolade to the show is that a fire marshall was on the premises for several hours just in case the facility exceeded its customer capacity. The November Hillsborough Show marks a triumph in many respects. As soon as it was rumored that Bob Taylor’s contract would not be renewed, people wondered who would be replacing him. The Hillsborough Show had been in a steady decline because of a lack of discipline and leadership for years and now it has been resurrected. One of the changes that Nancy Johnson made was in putting all of the dealers in one building

Garcera awakens the sleeping giant
Chuck Garcera certainly did reawaken the sleeping giant when he took over King Richard’s Antique Mall one year ago. The revitalized Whittier mall, the largest in Southern California, is celebrating its one year anniversary under Garcera in November and the improvements are far from over.King Richard’s has had a consistently brimming calendar of events in the last year, but none was as exciting as their Valentine’s Day meet and greet with Marilyn Monroe lookalike Brigette Nowell. She helped usher in one of their newest and trendiest vintage fashion dealers who was fresh from Hollywood.King Richard’s has hosted several appraisal days, and Garcera has shown an even greater devotion to antique education by inviting the College For Appraisers to hold their classes in his mall. In addition, Garcera was the first to offer up his mall for one of Frank’s Digital Delights last month, which was geared toward educating antiquers on computer and Facebook basics.King Richard’s is located at 12301 Whittier Blvd. in Whittier. Swifts present North san Diego County Antique and Collectable Show
San Diego is expected to be an ever greater antique destination with the addition of a new 1st Sunday antique show, The North San Diego County Antique and Collectable Show. The show is being presented by Timothy and Angela Swift, veteran antique dealers, and will be held at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. The first edition will be held on Sunday, November 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.Dealers include Nancy Theis, who will be conducting verbal appraisals, Lady Elain Eldridge of San Marcos, who was the first person to sign up for the first Collector’s Conference, and Deborah Streeter, manager of Fourth Street Antiques in Temecula, who hosted the final Digital Delight. Betty Theel of OB Creations will be setting up at the show, as will 629 Grand Avenue Antiques, and Bonnie of Escondido; she will have two spaces. The new indoor show may have some impact on the Calendar Del Mar Show, but since the Del Mar Show is only a held a few times a year, there doesn’t appear to be any conflicting dates. Although The Groves, held in Irvine, does draw upon a San Diego audience, it is unlikely to be affected by the new show because it has several hundred loyal dealers, free parking and free admission. It will undoubtedly continue to be the most formidable force in the Orange County area. The new show is held at 340 North Escondido Boulevard in Escondido. There is ample parking and easy access off the 15 and 78 freeways. Admission and parking is free. As of this writing, eight dealers had been recruited so undoubtedly dealer space is available.
